Fitting the Operation to the Patient for CABG Procedures

For years, clinical studies have compared the benefits, risks and outcomes between off-pump and on-pump cardiopulmonary bypass graft surgery (CABG). Studies have shown that both procedures offer their own benefits and no significant difference in terms of mortality.

On-Pump CABG (ONCAB) has shown more successful revascularization and better vein graft patency while Off-Pump CABG (OPCAB) has shown fewer post-operative complications such as a reduced risk of stroke, respiratory failure and need for blood transfusions.

Although ONCAB is the more common procedure at this time, surgeons striving to become more proficient in minimally-invasive techniques must develop their OPCAB skills.

Surgeons who are versatile in both techniques offer their patients the best outcomes by performing the procedure that best suits individual patient’s needs.

“As cardiothoracic surgeons, we must be able to perform both on- and off-pump CABG procedures. Any practice that uses either approach exclusively is fitting the patient to the operation rather than fitting the operation to the patient,” said Dr. Joseph Sabik, Cardiothoracic Surgeon.[1]

MED Alliance Solutions partners with manufacturers from around the world to offer an extensive portfolio of cardiothoracic surgical devices that can optimize and enhance ONCAB and OPCAB procedures. World-class surgeons, industry experts, and their peers have collaborated to design these innovative, user-friendly and progressive solutions that improve clinical performance and outcomes.
