Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons Can Improve Posterior Pericardial Drainage

Thorough drainage of blood from around the heart is necessary during and after cardiac surgery to prevent complications such as pleural effusion, cardiac tamponade, and postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF).[1]

These expensive complications and surgical interventions can be avoided by using an effective drainage catheter.

The Redax Kardia Spiral is a fluted thoracic catheter that can keep up with large amounts of hemorrhaging, even when placed in complex positions.

A clinical study found that the Redax Kardia Spiral™, enhances drainage surface area as much as 10 times compared to the traditional drain, allowing an improved evacuation of blood and hemorrhagic fluids from around the heart and lungs, preventing such complications.[2]

The Kardia Spiral™ enables complex positioning and enhanced drainage through the posterior pericardial space. According to a systematic review and meta-analysis by Gozdek et. al (2016), posterior pericardial drainage was associated with a 90% reduction of the odds of cardiac tamponade and significantly shortened (by nearly 1 day) overall length of hospital stay. Reductions in postoperative complications translated into significantly reduced odds of death or cardiac arrest.1

Dr. Hiroshi Kubota, Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Kyorin University Hospital in Japan, offered his insight on a retrospective survey that compared the Kardia Spiral to two conventional drains. He says, “The Spiral Drain provides real-time suctioning and is capable of suctioning from the entire 30cm channel section and is capable of suctioning from wherever hemorrhaging occurs, unlike the conventional drains that can only suction from the side holes.” Dr. Kubota also notes that no clogging occurred even though blood with high hematocrit levels was suctioned.[3]

    About the Kardia Spiral

The Kardia Spiral™ enhances fluid drainage, flow performance and patient comfort. The spiral fluted design enables complex positioning, permits the use of a smaller French size and minimizes tissue invagination. The direct high-flow transition from the indwelling design to a single bore tube maintains catheter patency while enhancing flow performance. The silicone construction reduces patient pain and discomfort for early mobilization is bio and hemo-compatible, and completely radiopaque.
