Experts Release Recommendations on the Safe Reintroduction of CV Services During COVID-19
As resources were diverted to respond to the COVID-19 crisis, elective cardiac surgeries across the country were postponed. Throughout the pandemic, the process in which we will return to normalcy has been the topic for much discussion.
The Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Canadian Journal of Cardiology recently released joint recommendations on the reintroduction of elective cardiac cases following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Authors suggest that due to the significant deferral of invasive cardiovascular procedures and diagnostic tests, patients with untreated CV disease are at an increased risk of adverse outcomes and delays in treatment will be detrimental. Above all else, authors state that collaboration among regional public health officials, health authorities and cardiovascular care providers is essential to ensure safe and strategic reintroduction of elective cardiac cases and diagnoses.
Guidance on how to reintroduce cardiovascular services across the country includes considerations such as the expectation that response levels will differ between regions, the availability of PPE and COVID-19 testing and the fact that minimally invasive procedures typically have a shorter length of stay and therefore may be preferable.
Though there will continue to be discussions about the prioritization and timeline of returning to delivering a full range of cardiovascular services, these recommendations serve as a general guideline that may give healthcare providers a place to start.
