Recovery Ready with Redax
Recovery from any surgery is no easy task. Recovering from heart surgery is even harder! To help combat the tough recovery, surgery techniques have changed. Now, with the arrival of less invasive surgery, surgeons are focused on minimizing postoperative pain and speeding up recovery. Limited-incision surgeries are used for coronary artery bypass grafting as well as valvular replacement and reconstruction, and are joined by new methods of pain management to aid in earlier recovery.¹
After surgery, the patient is usually in the ICU for a day, then moved to a regular recovery room for another three days, up to a week. Ambulation is extremely important in recovering patients as it promotes lung perfusion while decreasing the risk of pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and infection.² Ambulation in turn reduces readmissions to the hospital and reduces the length of stay for the patient, saving the hospital time and money, allowing them to have an empty bed sooner.
To enhance patient comfort, the industry has moved to silicone catheters to assist with early mobilization. Because it is soft and flexible, patient’s experience less discomfort when moving around and when the catheter is removed.
Redax, a manufacturer of cardiothoracic catheters, continuously strives to provide devices that facilitate the recovery of the patient. Redax catheters are made of silicone to help with early mobilization, and their construction allows for enhanced flow rates, enabling surgeons to use smaller sizes but with the same flow rate as a larger catheter. This allows the surgeon to use a smaller incision, furthering the effort to heal more quickly.
In addition to being constructed of silicone, both the Redax Coaxial and Kardia Spiral thoracic catheters feature a direct high-flow transition which enhances flow performance and maintains catheter patency. The Redax Coaxial is a dual-action catheter which removes fluid and air, while the Kardia Spiral has a spiral fluted design which enables complex positioning.
Redax products increase patient comfort and satisfaction with post-operative mobility and removal of the tubes. Patients that recover more quickly benefit with a decreased length of stay and hospitals benefit with reduced staff time and supply costs by supporting an earlier discharge.
